Built a James Gurney inspired sketchbook pochade for easy, portable watercolor painting. James Gurney generously provided detailed instructions on how he put his together.

Designed to hold a 5” X 8” Pentalic Aquajournal, it is managing to hold a slightly larger,  7” X 10” Arches Watercolor Fieldbook.

The system mounts on a standard photo tripod with a 1/4” bolt. Magnets are countersunk into the adjustable hinged palette holder, allowing for the metal watercolor palette (I put together a custom watercolor set filling 1/2 pans with selected colors and a metal palette) or the homemade metal palette pictured in the middle photo (a painted metal pencil box) to adhere.

Magnets are also glued to the bottom of the water containers, allowing them to hold fast to the metal palette or hinged lower section (you can see how they are sticking to the lower section in the top photo and to the palette in the middle photo). The clamps hold the sketchbook in place. Fun!

Gouache painting of the moon. The clouds were beautiful, but learned that painting in the dark is particularly challenging.

Last Plein Air day of the summer. Forgot to take a picture while at the beach. Hope to still get some painting in as the fall semester ensues!
